Introduction: Kundalini energy is a concept deeply rooted in the ancient spiritual traditions of India, yet its significance and relevance continue to captivate seekers of spiritual enlightenment worldwide. Often depicted as a coiled serpent lying dormant at the base of the spine, Kundalini represents a potent force believed to reside within every individual. Its awakening is said to unleash profound spiritual transformation, leading to heightened consciousness, self-realization, and profound states of bliss. In this article, we delve into the essence of Kundalini energy, exploring its origins, manifestations, and the practices associated with its awakening.

Origins and Concept: The concept of Kundalini finds its roots in the ancient texts of yoga, tantra, and Hindu philosophy. The term "Kundalini" is derived from Sanskrit, meaning "coiled" or "twisted," symbolizing the dormant energy lying at the base of the spine. Described as a primal cosmic energy, Kundalini is believed to be the creative force behind the universe and the source of life itself.

According to traditional teachings, Kundalini lies dormant within the subtle body, coiled around the base of the spine in the energy center known as the Muladhara chakra, or the root chakra. When awakened through spiritual practices, Kundalini ascends through the central energy channel, piercing through the various energy centers or chakras along the spine until it reaches the crown of the head, activating states of higher consciousness and spiritual awakening.

Manifestations and Effects: The awakening of Kundalini is said to induce a range of physical, mental, and spiritual experiences. Physically, individuals may experience sensations of energy moving along the spine, often described as heat, vibrations, or electric currents. These sensations may spread throughout the body, accompanied by involuntary movements or spontaneous yoga postures known as kriyas.

Mentally and emotionally, the awakening of Kundalini can bring about intense states of bliss, ecstasy, and heightened awareness. It may also surface unresolved emotions, fears, or traumas, leading to periods of emotional release and purification. As Kundalini rises, individuals may experience expanded states of consciousness, transcending ordinary perception and experiencing a profound sense of unity with the cosmos.

Practices and Techniques: Various spiritual traditions offer practices and techniques aimed at awakening and harnessing the power of Kundalini energy. These may include:

  1. Yoga: Specific yoga asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), and meditation techniques are believed to purify the body and mind, preparing them for the awakening of Kundalini.
  2. Meditation: Meditation practices such as mindfulness, mantra repetition, or guided visualization can help calm the mind and facilitate the flow of Kundalini energy.
  3. Kundalini Yoga: A specialized form of yoga focused on awakening Kundalini energy through a combination of physical postures, breathwork, chanting, and meditation.
  4. Tantra: Tantric practices incorporate rituals, visualization techniques, and sacred symbols to awaken and channel Kundalini energy for spiritual growth and transformation.
  5. Guru Initiation: In some traditions, the awakening of Kundalini is facilitated through initiation by a realised spiritual master or guru, who transmits the energy through a process known as shaktipat.

It is the latter techniques, I apply when working to awaken kundalini energy with my clients. I am no guru, but through embodying the flow of Kundalini, a tranbsmission does happen between me and my clients.

Conclusion: Kundalini energy represents a profound and transformative force that lies dormant within each of us, waiting to be awakened and harnessed for spiritual evolution. While the journey of Kundalini awakening can be intense and challenging, it holds the promise of profound inner transformation, leading to expanded consciousness, self-realisation, and a deeper connection with the divine. As with any spiritual practice, it is essential to approach the awakening of Kundalini with reverence, humility, and a readiness to surrender to the mysteries of the divine unfolding within.

I share with you a few quotes from a book I read recently:

Awakening Kundalini
the path to radical freedom
Lawrence Edwards, Phd

As I hear from individuals around the world about their Kundalini stirrings and awakenings, I am struck by the enormous variety of contexts in which these experiences occur. Kundalini shows her sometimes fierce, other times gentle, and always loving face in the personal transformations and awakenings that occur through yoga practices, religious practices, chanting and mantra practices, through trauma and near-death experiences, during sex, in intense prayer, in the violence of war, while out in nature, and in countless other ways. Kundalini can even begin to move when you are doing absolutely nothing in particular.

From the most expansive perspective of the macrocosm, Kundalini isShakti, the infinite power of
Consciousness that creates the entire universe and everything within it. From an interior, microcosmic perspective, Kundalini creates the universe of body and mind, every cell and every thought, while holding the potential power to directly know what is completely beyond the mind, beyond words, beyond even the imagination. These kinds of selftranscendent experiences, transpersonal in nature, can unfold over time and profoundly impact our lives. Transpersonal experiences come in many ways; they can happen in dreams, in sudden experiences walking down the street, in the midst of nature, or as one woman told me, in the Walmart parking lot! They aren't all Kundalini-related in the classic yogic sense, but they all reflect our innate power to perceive, to get glimpses of what lies beyond the curtain that marks the boundary of the ordinary mind.

It's the birthright of every human being to know Kundalini and through this power of grace, to know the Divine as Self. It's your innate capacity. The term Kundalini may sound foreign, but the power itself is as near to you as your breath. It's closer to you than any thought; it throbs within you more deeply than your beating heart. It's present in every aspect of your life.

She is the innate power of Universal Consciousness that reveals the answers by giving us the direct experience of the highest states of consciousness possible, with all the wisdom that is found there.

The transmission of Kundalini through shaktipat is likened to what happens if you are lost in the dark and have only an unlit candle in your hand. If you are fortunate to encounter someone with a lit candle, they can pass their flame to your candle. Your candle is easily lit from the one that is already ablaze. Without the gift of that flame, you might have to labor for a very long time to find the means to manually light a fire to light your candle. Shaktipat ignites the fire of Consciousness within you that illumines your way back to the Self.

C. G. Jung wrote, "When you succeed in the awakening of Kundalini, so that she starts to move out of her mere potentiality, you necessarily start a world which is totally different from our world: it is a world of eternity."

Having an interest in Kundalini, seeking to learn more about Kundalini, and seeking to experience for yourself her immense power are already signs of her
grace calling you home to your divine nature.

We need the awakened state of selflessness that Kundalini Shakti bestows, empowering people to recreate society, social structures, businesses, and economic systems on a cooperative model instead of the dominator mode that breeds destruction and war. The more She awakens people, the more individuals there will be transforming the collective consciousness of families, groups, towns, businesses, and countries. We are her organs of perception and action.
Empowered by Her, we can see clearly and act wisely.

Kundalini unfolding, the path to radical freedom, is the soul's journey; it is the great archetypal quest, the nivritti phase of cessation, of freeing oneself from forms, from malas, and the conditioned ego mind. It involves heroic encounters right in the context of your life as it is. It is a journey to the Infinite without going anywhere. It is a journey of absolute transcendence while becoming fully alive and present in your life now. It answers your deepest yearnings for freedom, purpose, meaning, and love.

The process of Kundalini awakening is the process of deepening your access to the Source, the source of your strength, your creativity, your powers, your wisdom, your internal source; your freedom is truly yours.
